Okay, so “Rory and Bones” – sounds like a cute kids’ show, right? Well, it’s actually what I decided to name my little weekend project. I wanted to play around with creating, I don’t know, something digital. I’m not a programmer, mind you, but I like tinkering.
The Idea Pops Up
It all started when I was cleaning out the attic. Found a box of old photos, and there was this one of my childhood dog, Rory, and he was gnawing on this massive bone. Bam! Inspiration hit. I thought, “I’ll make…a digital photo frame thingy!”
Fumbling Around
First, I grabbed my old tablet. Thing’s ancient, but it still works. I wiped it down – seriously, so much dust – and charged it up. Then came the hard part… figuring out how to actually do anything. I spent a good hour just googling “easy photo display apps.” Most of them were, well, not easy. Or they wanted me to pay, and I wasn’t about to do that for a silly weekend project.
The “Aha!” Moment
Eventually, I stumbled upon this really simple slideshow app. No fancy features, just basic image display. Perfect! I downloaded it (took forever, because, old tablet) and then started hunting down some suitable pictures. I scanned a bunch of the old Rory photos, and also grabbed some random nature shots I’d taken on my phone.
Putting it Together
Getting the photos onto the tablet was a whole other adventure. I ended up using a USB cable and my laptop as the middleman. Took some fiddling, but I got them all transferred into a folder I named (you guessed it) “Rory and Bones”.
Next, I opened the slideshow app, pointed it to that folder, and… ta-da! Pictures started cycling through. It was… underwhelming. Just photos flashing by. So, I played with the settings. Changed the transition speed, added a fade effect (ooh, fancy!), and messed with the display order.
The Finishing Touches
It still needed something. So, I propped the tablet up on a little stand I found in a drawer, placed it on my bookshelf, and let it run. And you know what? It’s actually kind of nice. It’s like a little digital memory corner. Every time I walk by, I see Rory goofing around, or a pretty sunset, and it makes me smile.
Lessons Learned (Sort Of)
- Old tech can still be useful! Don’t throw out those dusty gadgets just yet.
- Simple is sometimes better. I didn’t need a super-complex app to achieve what I wanted.
- Even small projects can be satisfying. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about the process.
So, yeah, that’s the story of “Rory and Bones”. It’s not going to win any awards, but it’s mine, and I enjoyed making it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go find some more old photos…
