Well, let me tell ya, Gumbo ain’t just any dog, no ma’am! This here fella, he’s a big ol’ Saint Bernard, and not just any ol’ dog, he’s got himself a job as the mascot for the New Orleans Saints football team. Now, if you don’t know who the Saints are, honey, you might want to check your TV—’cause they’re big in the football world, especially down here in New Orleans!

Gumbo the Dog: How the Saint Bernard Became the New Orleans Saints Mascot

So, this Gumbo dog, he’s special, alright. He’s got his own jersey, number 00, and some black pants, black shoes. Looks like he’s ready for a game anytime, right there on the field with the players! Now, you might wonder where he came from, well, let me tell ya. The Louisiana Restaurant Association thought it’d be a nice idea to gift the Saints with a mascot, and so they picked out this big ol’ Saint Bernard dog to represent ’em. Why a Saint Bernard, you ask? Well, it just made sense, didn’t it? After all, it’s like a symbol of New Orleans—strong, friendly, and always there when you need ’em. Plus, Gumbo’s name, it’s a bit of a nod to that tasty New Orleans dish, you know the one. A little food, a little history, a whole lotta fun!

Now, this Gumbo dog ain’t alone. He’s got himself a buddy, Sir Saint. Sir Saint’s another mascot, and let me tell you, the two of ’em make quite the pair. Gumbo’s the more laid-back, easygoing fella, while Sir Saint’s got that real football-player look to him—tall, fair-skinned, big ol’ chin, and a look that says, “I’m ready for some action.” They’re like the perfect team, you might say.

But Gumbo, he ain’t just a mascot to look cute. Nah, he’s out there makin’ sure everyone knows the Saints mean business. Whether it’s at a game or at a parade, Gumbo’s out there, spreadin’ cheer, throwin’ high-fives, and just all-around representin’ New Orleans in the best way he knows how. Folks love him—kids, adults, tourists, and locals alike. Everybody loves a dog, don’t they? Especially one as friendly and big-hearted as Gumbo!

And let me tell ya somethin’ else, Gumbo’s been around a long time. He’s been the Saints’ mascot since the 1960s, long before many folks even knew what football was, and he’s still goin’ strong today. Back in 1967, Gumbo first showed up on the scene, and people just fell in love with him. It was a big ol’ deal at the time, and you can bet it’s still a big ol’ deal now!

He might be a dog, but Gumbo’s got a whole lotta heart. And that heart beats for New Orleans and the Saints! He’s at every home game, at all the Saints’ events, and even shows up when they win big, celebratin’ like there’s no tomorrow! Gumbo’s all about bringing the fun, the energy, and a little bit of that New Orleans spirit wherever he goes.

Now, you might think, what’s so special about a dog wearin’ a jersey? But let me tell ya, it’s more than just the outfit. It’s about the love folks have for this team, and how Gumbo represents that spirit. He’s part of the family, like a beloved pet that never lets you down. He’s a big ol’ dog with a big ol’ heart, and that’s what folks love about him.

Gumbo might not be the biggest player on the field, but when it comes to bringing folks together, there’s no one better than him. Whether you’re at a game, or just out and about, when you see Gumbo, you know it’s time to have some fun and cheer on the Saints!

So next time you hear about Gumbo, just remember—he’s not just some mascot dog. He’s the face of New Orleans, a symbol of joy and pride, and someone who’ll always be there to get the crowd hyped up. And if you ever get the chance, be sure to give him a pat on the head—you know he’s a good boy who loves the Saints just as much as you do!
