Okay, so the other day I found this old crossword puzzle, tucked inside a book I hadn’t opened in ages. The theme was kinda weird, something like “Buys and Sells”. Sounded simple enough, right? Stuff about shopping, maybe money. I figured, piece of cake.

Getting Started

So, I grabbed a pencil – always pencil for crosswords, you know how it is – and sat down with a cup of coffee. Started scanning the clues, looking for the easy ones to get a foothold. Found a few gimmes right away. Stuff like “Place to buy bread” (BAKERY, obviously) or “Opposite of sell” (BUY). Felt pretty good, filling in those first few letters. It always feels good getting started, makes you think you’re gonna breeze through it.

I worked through the across clues first, then the downs, hopping around where the letters intersected. Some were about shops, others about markets. Pretty straightforward for a bit. I even got a couple of longer answers related to maybe auctions or something. Thought I was really getting the hang of this specific puzzle’s wavelength.

Hitting a Wall

Then, things got sticky. Some clues were just… odd. They weren’t about straightforward buying like at the grocery store. They seemed to hint at different kinds of trading, maybe older terms or business concepts I hadn’t thought about in a while. One clue was something like “Haggler’s goal” and I was stumped for a bit. Needed a few crossing letters before DEAL finally clicked.

There were a few others that really made me scratch my head. I put the puzzle down for a while, refilled my coffee. Sometimes just stepping away helps shake something loose. When I came back, I tried a few things:

  • Thinking about different kinds of ‘selling’ – like selling an idea, not just a product.
  • Considering older words for markets or traders.
  • Looking at the already filled letters and just trying out combinations.

It was slow going for a while. A couple of clues felt like they were deliberately trying to trick me, using puns on ‘buy’ or ‘sell’. That’s classic crossword stuff, but still annoying when you’re stuck! I resisted the urge to just look up answers – where’s the fun in that? Felt more rewarding to wrestle with it myself.

Finishing Up

Eventually, I started making progress again. Got one tricky corner, which opened up a few more answers in the middle. It’s like a domino effect sometimes. You get one tough word, and suddenly three others make sense. There was this one word related to stock markets, took me ages, but the crossing letters finally pinned it down.

The last few squares took some concentration. Double-checking the clues, making sure everything fit. And then, finally, the last letter went in. Done. Felt pretty satisfied, I gotta say. It wasn’t the hardest puzzle ever, but that “Buys and Sells” theme was more interesting than I first thought. Made me think about all the different ways we exchange things.

Anyway, that was my little puzzling adventure for the day. Just a simple crossword, but a good way to spend an hour or so, keeping the old brain working. Always nice to finish what you start, you know?
