Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my putting grip lately, trying to find something that feels more… I don’t know… solid. I stumbled across some stuff about Patrick Cantlay’s grip, and it looked interesting, so I figured, why not give it a shot?

Patrick Cantlays Putter Grip: How to Hold Your Putter Like a Pro

First thing I did was watch a couple of videos. Just to get a general idea of what his hands were doing. It’s not a crazy different grip, but the details matter, right?

Then, I headed out to the putting green. No range balls, no nothing – just me, my putter, and a few balls. I started by trying to mimic what I saw in the videos. The big thing I noticed was how much his left hand was in control. It felt weird at first, almost like I was gripping it too tight, but I kept at it.

  • I spent a good 15 minutes just getting used to the feel of the grip. No actual putting, just holding the putter and making little practice swings.
  • Then, I started hitting some short putts. Like, really short – two or three feet. The goal was to get the ball rolling smoothly, not to make a bunch of putts.
  • Slowly I Increased the putt distance, from short putts to long putts.

After about an hour, I started to get a better feel for it. My stroke felt more stable, less handsy. I wasn’t making everything, but I felt like I had more control over the putter face, which is huge.

The Result?

It’s still early days, but I’m optimistic. I’m definitely going to keep working on this grip. It might not be for everyone, but it’s worth a try if you’re looking for something to help you feel more connected to the putter. I need to keep practicing, of course, but it’s feeling good so far. Maybe I’ll even start putting like Cantlay… a guy can dream, right?
